Parenting: A Modern Democracy (not!) or a Medieval Papacy?
Sun, 5/09/10 – 8:10 | No Comment

“This house IS NOT a democracy!” How many times did you ever hear your parents say (or scream) that? And how often do you say it now?

I am thankful for my friend Lizzie. For the talking, listening, and WRITING. For the humor, and completely different experiences that were pretty similar… (and the ones that weren’t, ha ha)
For Facebook, and the ability to type fast.
For a wonderful guest, bearing a lovely gift basket, and a blue pedicure after an asian lunch.
For a very fun sleepless sleep over.
For being shown that this season of parenting does not last forever (and being shown why that is both something to look forward to and be nervous about, LOL).
For a friendship that materialized at just the right moment.

Happy Thanksgiving! (before you start your mad prep and drive, wasn’t sure if I’d get you tomorrow)

I am thankful for my friend Jane, who greets me as I sip my morning coffee with an inbox full of wit and riches.  Who has a way of asking the right questions at the right times. Who is a writing friend–that rare and elusive breed of girlfriend who knows she has something to SAY. Who pushed me to overcome political shyness and engage during a time that was about so much more than politics. Who makes me laugh with a humor that is part Kafka, part Wilde, and the rest a never-to-be-repeated amalgam of Monty Python and Tallulah Bankhead.

I am thankful for warm hospitality and sparkly, midnight-blue toenails over a birthday weekend. For an old-fashioned pajama party that leaves you wishing you could press a temporary "no-need-to-sleep" button. And for reminders that seasons passed through have meaning for someone else.

I am thankful for the freedom to question, to drop hymnals, to rail, to invite the inner slut into the conversation, to share a rainbow UM-brella, to giggle, to scream, to rejoice, to unravel and re-weave. All in dialogue.

Happy Thanksgiving, my dear new/old friend.

mmmmmmwaaah!

thanks for one the big smile this morning!

Kafka, Wilde, Python and Bankhead, really??? Awesome…

Thank you.

How was the homecoming of the college girl?

Oh yes, those four very different masters of gallows humor. Awesome indeed.

Charlotte’s homecoming has been really good. We all did the NY Times crossword and watched House together last night. Today we will bake together and Haley will help me highlight my hair.

Monday night Sylvia and I had an essay-writing marathon. She asked me for help in writing her common-app essay–about her trip to Zambia last summer. She ended up with something beautiful, and I got to see her smiling and excited.

(Oh, I went and got a professional cut yesterday. It’s been a full year, and it does feel good!)

So MUCH to be thankful for. My cup runneth over.

Oh, and here is a video that my friend Rosemary shared with me. It’s very funny and snarky.
