“This house IS NOT a democracy!” How many times did you ever hear your parents say (or scream) that? And how often do you say it now?

Jane’s 2009 Resolution Ruminations

Submitted by Jane on Tuesday, 6 January 2009No Comment

I am already transcribing my 2009 New Year’s resolutions onto my 2010 list, thereby fulfilling my 2008 resolutions to plan ahead (and not procrastinate) when possible.

Below is a list of previous years’ resolutions. Have I completed them?
Only a small cadre of my closest friends (well, they and my shrink) knows for sure…

I will be a less yelling, more nurturing sort of mom.
Even if learning how to do this requires watching several hours of Nick at Nite reruns to learn from Clare Huxtable, and Jill
(who was married to Tim the Tool Man) Taylor.

I will make real progress in de-cluttering my home
I aspire to have a Real Simple inspired laundry room, but this is giving me a serious Container Store Complex. Buying bins and baskets is a great excuse not to have to throw anything away. It’s all about the storage, baby…  (take that, Real Simple editors!)

I will work out more, and try new classes at the gym  Sigh.  Instead of Facebooking and surfing the web in the WiFi equipped lobby while my kids are taking Karate and Ballet.  That lobby with the comfy leather couches that whisper to me, "Jane, Jane, come take a nap, Jane…"

I will not finish the left over mac and cheese in my daughter Lulu’s bowl.  Even the Annie’s White Cheddar.  Really.

Here’s a request resolution from my husband:

I will Facebook less often  Yeah, right.  So soon after you bought me an iPhone, Mr. Enabler?

Lizzie knows I agree with her about the chocolate (gotta get in those antioxidants and McD’s fries!)  Boo on the Real Simple/Oprah editors who want us to make sure to fail resolutions that might ban the more nutritionally nefarious necessities of daily existence.  And who wouldn’t want to add a bit more Jane Austen as well as Jane Austen-esque vocabulary in their lives?  Especially my literary friend Lizzie (whose own tales are pretty darned amusing and felicitous, by the way!  Especially whenshe is telling tales of her own coquetry…)

If there was one item on her list I might beg to differ with, it is Target.  I love Tarzhay.  So Lizzie, as much as I love love my very handsome UPS man (and let’s not get me going on the hunky FedEx guy…) I also love a trip to my favorite low-cost, high-design big box store.

This is where I might add the resolution I absolutely intend to keep: BUYING LOCAL.  Whenever possible.

Please take a look at Lizzie’s list here.
